Minister Tudor Ulianovschi met with Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization Francis Gurry
On February 28, 2018, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Tudor Ulianovschi had a meeting with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Francis Gurry. During the discussion, the two officials approached the cooperation priorities between the Republic of Moldova and WIPO, mentioning the positive results obtained by the Republic of Moldova in the field of intellectual property protection.

The UN high-ranking official was informed about the Republic of Moldova's submission of the instrument of ratification of the Marrakesh Treaty on access to published works of blind or visually impaired people administered by WIPO. Ratifying the treaty is an important step in promoting the rights of this category of people and facilitating their social and professional integration.

In the context of the implementation of Agenda 2030, in particular of the Sustainable Development Objective no. 9, the head of the Moldovan diplomacy mentioned the optimization of the national research and innovation system by merging of the Public Institution “Research and Development Agency”, the Agency for Innovation and Technology Transfer and the International Projects Center subordinated to the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova in a single institution - the National Agency for Research and Development. The Authority will be responsible for evaluating project proposals submitted by researchers, by competition, irrespective of their institutional ownership.

Interlocutors also discussed the outcome of the 57th round of WIPO member states' meetings in October 2017, expressing the hope that existing obstacles in promoting the organization's regulatory agenda will be overcome during the current year.

Note: The World Intellectual Property Organization is the UN specialized agency responsible for policies, services and intellectual property co-operation. WIPO provides services for intellectual rights and dispute resolution in 189 member states and manages international treaties on copyright, patents and trademarks. The Republic of Moldova became a member of WIPO in 1991.
