Working visit of the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Mr. Eugen Carpov to the U.S.

On May 5-6, 2014 the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Mr. Eugen Carpov paid a working visit to the U.S.

On May 5 the Moldovan official held talks with Assistant Secretary Victoria Nuland, Deputy Assistants of the Secretary of State, Eric Rubin, Thomas Melia, Brent Hartley and other representatives of the U.S. administration. In the same day a meeting was held with a group of American experts in the field of foreign and security policy. Discussions were focused on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, the crisis in Ukraine and other relevant topics.

Eugen Carpov presented the current situation regarding the Transnistrian settlement process, highlighting a number of risks and worrying trends in the light of recent developments at the regional level. At the same time, it was reiterated that Moldova pledges to solve existing problems through dialogue under the existing formats of negotiations. Victoria Nuland and Eric Rubin supported the Moldovan authorities' approach, stressing the relevance of promoting political dialogue and confidence-building measures to prevent outbreaks of tension.

On May 6 the Moldovan official met with members of Congress - congressmen Joe Pitts, Eliot Engel and Senator Ben Cardin and the Acting Director for European affairs at the National Security Council Tara Lewling and attended a special briefing dedicated to Moldova and the situation in the region organized by the Helsinki Commission of the U.S. Congress.

The discussions at the National Security Council were focused on developing the Moldovan-American relations, priorities in the support for the Moldovan authorities and the international community's efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
